Mangalore, also called Mangaluru or Kudla, is a port city on Karnataka's Arabian Sea coast where the Netravathi and Gurupura rivers meet the sea. It mixes old temples, Portuguese-era churches, busy markets and palm-fringed beaches. Many visitors use it as a base for the coastal belt, including Udupi, Malpe and St. Mary's Islands, and for the Western Ghats inland. The city is also known for its food, from vegetarian Udupi-style meals to rich coastal seafood.
October to February
October to February is the most pleasant and popular period, with cooler, drier weather that suits beaches and sightseeing. June to September is the moderate monsoon season, with heavy rain and lush scenery. March to May is hot and humid, so it is the off-season.
Mangalore was once a flourishing port known as Mangalapura, and its place on the Arabian Sea drew traders from Arabia, Persia and Europe. Over the centuries it passed through the hands of the Kadambas, the Vijayanagara Empire, the Keladi Nayakas, the Portuguese, the Mysore Sultans and the British. The name is linked to the goddess Mangaladevi, whose temple is among the city's most revered shrines. Hindu temples such as Kadri Manjunath and Kudroli Gokarnanatha stand alongside historic churches such as St. Aloysius Chapel, and the Hindu, Christian and Muslim communities have shaped a layered local culture. Coastal traditions of festivals, food and a distinct local identity continue today. The Aati festival is held in August, and Dussehra falls in September or October.
