Honnavar is a small, laid-back coastal town in Uttara Kannada district, where the Sharavathi River meets the Arabian Sea. Its estuary, mangrove islets, quiet beaches, waterfalls and temples make it a calm alternative to the busier stops at Gokarna, Murudeshwar and Karwar. The Western Ghats rise behind the town, so you can combine backwater boating, mangrove boardwalks and beach time with short drives to Idagunji and Murudeshwar. It sits roughly midway between Mangalore and Goa and is easy to reach from Bengaluru, Shimoga and Jog Falls.
October to February
The cooler, drier months from October to February are the most comfortable, with temperatures around 20-25°C, clear skies and gentle sea breezes that suit boating, beach hopping and light trekking. The monsoon turns the waterfalls and forests lush and green, but boating and beach activities are often restricted. Summer, from March to May, is hot and humid.
Honnavar has long been a port town at the mouth of the Sharavathi, and the coast around it has seen Portuguese and British influence over the centuries. Its temples, old churches and mosques reflect a mixed religious heritage. Idagunji Mahaganapati Temple is a major pilgrimage site in the region, and the Jain heritage at Gerusoppa, including Chaturmukha Basadi, recalls the area's medieval history. Local life revolves around fishing, areca and coconut plantations and the river. Coastal Karnataka food, Kannada-speaking communities and traditional temple festivals shape its culture.
